Piece Number 2, like its neighbor number 1, contains a lot of “Firsts” for this series. This is the first lamp to utilize heavy “roller chain.” Our artist is infatuated with the versatility of this component, yet finds it equally challenging to obtain the perfect contour that is pleasing to the eye. For this example, the chain appears to emerge rather naturally from the center gear housing / base, like some serpent arching its long spine. Unique features include the gears on the base, which spin with the flick of your finger, as well as the oil pump ring that frames the Edison bulb. Also the red cloth covered wire is displayed along the outside of the spine, held in place with beautiful polished copper wire.
As with every piece thus far, included in the purchase of the lamp is a hand made wooden crate for storage or display. This crate is hand stained, numbered, outfitted with upholstery, and hand sewn leather handles. The crate could easily be considered a work of art itself.
