Piece Number 9 utilizes a dramatic sweeping pinion gear base, which has served its time as the drive mechanism within a machine capable of pulling down a house. As it has retired from that laborius task, it now finds itself relaxing as a piece of functional art. Hidden within the first chain link above the gear is a unique cantilever switch mechanism. By lifting or depressing the rocker arm (which is a essential piece of any valve train in a combustion engine), it actuates the switch for the lamp, which is buried deep within the body of the gear. Again on this lamp, the artist has utilized bare copper wire to attach the cloth covered conductor to the body, creating a rich contrast in metals and materials.
The lamp head pivots, using an aluminum turnbuckle to control its accent or decent, allowing the user to adjust the destination of the warm glow emitted from the Edison bulb. At the back of the lamp head, you’ll find a brass starter gear that has been brazed onto the steel, adding another element of metallic luster. As with every piece thus far, included in the purchase of the lamp is a hand made wooden crate for storage or display. This crate is hand stained, numbered, outfitted with upholstery, and hand sewn leather handles. The crate could easily be considered a work of art itself.
